How Do Search Engines Take Description To Be Shown With The Search Results

As far as high ranking is considered to be very important part of SEO same ways an attractive description in the displayed search results is very important for our website link to be clicked by the web surfers.

You must be wondering on this how do these top search engines take the description to be shown with the search results, below are the process followed by the top two Search engines (GOOGLE and YAHOO) to grab the description for the display of search result.
  • How Google creates descriptions and snippets
Google seems to use the description from the Meta description tag if you search for a page by its URL, or if the searched keywords do not appear within the found page. If that web page doesn't have a Meta description tag then Google might also use the description that is used in the DMOZ directory.

  • How Yahoo creates descriptions and snippets
Yahoo seems to use only the first part of the Meta description, but If a web page doesn't have a Meta description, Yahoo will use the description of the web page from Yahoo's directory (if the page is listed there). If the web page has no Meta description and is not listed in the Yahoo directory, then Yahoo will display sentences from the found web page that contain the searched keywords.

If you don't want to use the description that is used in the Yahoo directory and on DMOZ.org you should use the corresponding tags that prevent search engines from using these descriptions.

Google's New Project: Knol

Google has announced a new project where people can share their knowledge by providing a well-organized, easy-to-use tool, this free tool is knol (knol stands for a unit of knowledge).
Google is coming out with Google Knol (Knowledge) which is exactly what Wikipedia is all about. The Google Knol sounds like it may just be a whole lot of wheel invention. Basically, this is a knowledge base - where experts write up articles and users have a chance to benefit from the wisdom. In Knol Google will provide authoring tools, store the information, allow others to comment and suggest edits, add ads with the author’s approval, and provide traffic via their search engine.

X-Robots-Tag : Controlled Access To Non-Webpage Documents

Google recently introduced the new X-Robots-Tag directive to allow webmasters to control access to non-webpage documents, such as PDF files, audio and video files, that doesn’t mean it will help to increase search engine ranking for your website or blog. The X-Robots-Tag is included in the HTTP header of a document. The new X-Robots-Tag allows webmasters to add information about search engine indexing to the HTTP header.

Last week only, Yahoo announced that they now support the X-Robots-Tag in the HTTP header of a document. This new tag allows you to influence how and which WebPages Google and Yahoo indexes. The X-Robots-Tag is currently supported by Google and Yahoo only; other search engines don't support the tag yet.

X-Robots-Tag supports the following commands:
  • NOINDEX
  • NOARCHIVE
  • NOSNIPPET
  • NOFOLLOW

Whitepapers : Powerful Marketing Tools

These days’ white papers are powerful marketing tools used to justify implementing solutions. White papers basically discuss a specific business issue, product, or competitive situation. White papers are used to educate customers, collect leads for a company or help people make decisions.

In many cases, they summarize information about a topic, for example the results of a survey or study and then suggest a proposal for action, with the research data providing the justification for the action.

There are really only two ways to write white papers:
  1. By focusing on your self-interests or
  2. By concentrating on the interests of your readers

Google Has Finally Structured Out A New Guidelines For The Paid Links

Google has ordered out a new policy for the Paid Links. Google has added the word “selling” to its new updates, making it clear that Google will now be keeping a eye on the people on both ends of the transaction.

"Buying or selling links that pass PageRank is in violation of Google's webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results."

A slight change, but also an important one because now, any webmaster who sells links on their site without knowing about things like PageRank and text link manipulation is at risk of being penalized by Google. In the past, Google was only going after those who were actively trying to game the rankings by bulking up on paid text links.
